Obituary of Wayne Grant Cameron
After 45 years and over 5,000 students, I am moving on.
I look back at a breadth of experiences including teaching in a vocational school, a rural school, urban schools and inner-city schools and all the varied students who have been a part of those worlds. Memories abound of students who grew from reluctant and/or enthusiastic students to accomplished professionals, to admired artists, to successful business people, to unsuspecting levels of achievement, and yes, there was heartbreak of those who did not make it.
Every day, I was filled with anticipation of what new adventure would arise out of the interplay of the classroom, and I would leave with a new experience to cherish. And as time has gone on, I have savoured those moments of encountering past students and observing how they have made their way.
Recognizing the value of our Federation in advancing education and our role in it, I served as communication chairperson, first and third vice-president and as an AMPA representative for several years. I saw the service as an obligation and an opportunity.
My time was filled with people, ideas and experiences, with writing, designing and building.
My journey ended on Sunday, September 11th, 2022, with my loving and devoted wife by my side. Jessica, thank you for the 35 wonderful years shared. Survived by my sister Shirley (Graham) Sawer and my sister-in-law Lynn (the late Roger) La Pratte.
When all is said and done, teaching is still about what you can do in your classroom not in climbing some ladder for personal recognition, not in assuming that the next fad will miraculously make you effective.
Our only focus should be on being the best teacher we can be.
I am proud to have been a teacher.
