Obituary of Norman Richard Gilbert
On Monday, August 20, 2018, Norman Richard “Rick” Gilbert passed away at the St. Thomas-Elgin General Hospital after a lengthy struggle with several major health issues at the age of 71. Rick is survived by his wife, Maureen (née McIver) and son Tim, both of Port Stanley, his brother Jim (Karen) of Crawford Bay, British Columbia, sister-in-law Mary Casey of St. Thomas and several dearly loved nieces, nephews, cousins, Godchildren and friends. Rick was predeceased by his father George M. Gilbert and his mother Gladis S. (née Taylor). Rick’s working career included being the assistant manager of the new Port Stanley Arena and manager of the Tilbury Golf and Curling Club. He also worked for years in management at several different manufacturing companies, in sectors such as aluminum siding, windows and automotive. The work that he enjoyed the most and took greatest pride in was being the caretaker and groundskeeper of Christ Church Anglican, Port Stanley. Rick was one of the founding members of the original Port Stanley Optimist Club. Rick will be remembered for his intellect and dry sense of humour. His favourite past time was reminiscing with old friends about the good old days growing up in Port Stanley. In accordance with Rick’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no funeral or visitation. An informal Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In the immortal words of the late, great Buddy Holly: “Well, I guess it doesn’t matter anymore.” Arrangements entrusted to St. Thomas-Elgin Cremation (519-857-5246).
